1.Information stored on your device
Closer saves a few things locally, using standard on-device storage. This information never leaves your phone and is never transmitted to us:
| What's stored | Why |
|---|---|
| Display name e.g. "Alex" | Used to personalize the on-screen game text. Purely cosmetic — you can set it to anything. |
| Unlocked decks & All-Access status | So the app remembers which decks you've purchased. |
| Conversation Gym progress XP, rank | So your practice progress persists between sessions. |
| Onboarding status | So you don't see the intro slides more than once. |
| Language preference | So the app opens in the language you chose (English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, or French). |
| Anonymous usage ID | A random identifier generated by the app, used only to group anonymous usage statistics (see section 2). It is not linked to your name, email, or Apple ID. |
Deleting the app deletes this data from your device. Your display name, game progress, and purchases are never sent to us.
2.Game content & network requests
Closer downloads its decks, questions, and Conversation Gym scenarios from our own servers so we can update and expand content over time. These requests fetch game content only — they don't send your name, purchases, or progress. Like any request to any server, they inherently include standard technical information (such as IP address and device type) used only to deliver content and keep the service running. If you tap the thumbs up or thumbs down on a question, the app sends that question's ID so we can improve the decks. It doesn't include your name or any other personal details.
Anonymous usage statistics. Closer sends simple events to our analytics provider, PostHog: for example that the app was opened, which screen or deck was viewed, that a purchase screen was shown or a purchase completed, and which language you selected. Each event carries only the random usage ID above, your platform and app version, and the screen name. We never send your name, your answers, the text of your conversations, your contacts, or your location.
Apple Ads attribution. If you installed Closer after tapping one of our ads in the App Store, iOS can tell us which campaign led to the install. The app asks Apple for an attribution token and sends it to Apple, which replies with the campaign, ad group, and keyword. We attach that to the anonymous usage statistics so we can see which ads work. This uses Apple's AdServices framework, does not use your advertising identifier (IDFA), and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
3.In-app purchases
Deck unlocks and the All-Access pass are billed through Apple's In-App Purchase system. Apple handles your payment method, billing address, and transaction details directly — we never receive or store your card information. We only know whether a given purchase was completed, so we can unlock the matching content.
4.Audio & microphone
Closer does not request, require, or access your device's microphone. The app only plays short local audio effects (such as the game timer bell chime). No audio is ever recorded, captured, saved, or transmitted anywhere.
5.What we don't do
- No advertising. Closer shows no ads and has no ad network integrated. Apple Ads is used only to measure our own App Store campaigns, as described above.
- No cross-app tracking. We don't use your advertising identifier, don't ask for tracking permission, and don't share usage data with data brokers or ad partners.
- No accounts, no social features. There's no login, no profile visible to other users, and no way for your answers or conversations to be seen by anyone but the people in the room with you.
- No selling of personal data. Usage statistics are anonymous and are processed on our behalf by our analytics provider only.
6.Children's privacy
Closer is designed for adults. The Parent & Child deck is meant to be played together with a parent or guardian, who reads the questions and operates the app. Several decks (After Dark in particular) contain content intended for adults 18 and over, and the App Store age rating reflects this. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and because the app requires no account or sign-up, we do not collect personal information from any user regardless of age.
7.Changes to this policy
If Closer's data practices change — for example, if we add an account system or new kinds of data collection in the future — we'll update this page and revise the date at the top. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
8.Contact
Questions about this policy or your data can go straight to the developer.
